Sindhudurg is one of the most powerful forts built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Arabian Sea of Maharashtra. Construction of the fort began on 25 November 1664. The fort was built by Hiroji Indulkar. On June 21, 2010, the fort was declared a National Protected Monument by the Government of India.
Importance of Sindhudurg Fort: -
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's armor was very important. Sindhudurg Fort is spread over 48 acres on Kurt Island. The length of the ramparts of the fort is about three kilometers. The fort has 52 bastions and 45 stone staircases.There is a freshwater stone well on the fort. The wells are named as Milk Well, Dahi Well, Sugar Well. Shivaji Maharaj has built 35 to 40 toilets on this fort at that time. There is a temple of Lord Shiva in the form of Lord Shiva on this fort. This temple was built by Shivaputra Rajaram Maharaj.
History of Sindhudurg Fort: -
The Sindhudurg fort in Malvani is the abode of the Swarajya Armory. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had 362 forts extending to Bijapur in the east, the Arabian Sea in the west, Hubli in the south, and Khandesh Varhad in the north. Along with hill forts and Bhuikot, forts were built around the world to repel enemy attacks on the sea route. After inspecting the coast, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj laid the foundation stone of the fort in 1664 on an island called Kurte near Malvan. Today this place is famous as the morya stone. On one rock, Ganesh idol, on one side Surya Kriti and on the other side Chandrakriti Korun Maharaj worshiped.
It is said that the construction of this fort cost about one crore hons. It took three years to build this fort. The Koli people who found the right place to build Sindhudurg were given village prizes. This fort, which has natural and historical beauty, is situated on the Kurt rock, which is half a mile from Malvan, a pure black rock. The fort has a coastline of 2 miles. It is 30 feet high and 12 feet wide. The fort has 22 bastions. There are sharp rocks around the bastion. To the west lies the endless sea.
Places to see on Sindhudurg Fort: -
The entrance to the fort is on the east. Not realizing there is an entrance to the place. It looks like a sack that encloses with a drawstring. Going through this gorge, the gate of the fort is opened. This door is made of slate. Once inside, there is a small temple of Maruti. There is a way from the temple to the bastion. About 10 miles from the bastion is visible. To the west is the temple of Jarimari. People still live there today. In the temple and mandapa of Shri Shivrajeshwar, the sitting image of Maharaj can be seen. The main feature of Sindhudurg fort is that Rameshwar's palanquin comes to this fort every twelve years. When the British conquered the fort, it was demolished. The lime used for the construction of the fort is still visible today. The saffron flag of the Marathas, the flagpole was 288 feet high. This flag was easily visible from far away from the sea. This saffron flag was flying till 1812.
There are places for keeping guns in various places on the fort. Holes have been made in the wall to prevent guns. The construction of the Sindhudurg fort in Konkan is considered very important from the point of view of Maharaj. The fort was built by the Maharaja with the witness and diligence of innumerable Mavals. It is still happening today.
Drinking water facility at the fort: -
There are three freshwater wells in the vicinity of Sindhudurg fort. Their names are Dudhbaw, Dahibaw and Sakharbaw. The water of these wells is very sweet in taste. There is salt water outside the fort and fresh water inside. A dry pond was built to store extra water. Currently, the water is used to grow vegetables.
